N-Gage Revival And iPhone SDK Raise Anchor For Mobile Gaming

Posted by Jody Mitoma on February 7, 2008

Wired had a bit to say about accelerometers, and the iphone’s upcoming SDK yesterday evening. It’s a good write up, so I figured I’d share their post with you all.

quote-long

What do accelerometers, the iPhone SDK and touchscreens have in common? They’re the three big things that could see cellphone gaming have its first good year. Even the N-Gage revival finally took off on Monday, opening its doors to public testing after months of delay.

“A lot of people were inspired by what happened with the Nintendo Wii,” said Matthew Turetzky, RealNetworks’ vice president of non-PC gaming, when I spoke to him at a recent trade show. “But touchscreen is the big change, with the iPhone. It’s such a perfect technology for the casual gaming experience.”

Apparently The iPhone SDK Key Has Been Leaked Is Still a Secret

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 29, 2008

1-29-08-iphone-sdk

Here is a quote from TUAW:

Last night, an anonymous tipster pointed us to this Austin Heap webpage that purportedly reveals the iPhone’s secret Application SDK key. Another tipster, also anonymous, then tipped me to iPhone “Elite” developer Zibri’s blog, that shows the same key. So what does this mean? Since all iPhone applications must be properly signed for iTunes to process them and for the iPhone to load them, this key suggests that hackers are closer to creating compliant IPA application bundles for home-brew iTunes distribution. With the proper key, developers can create and distribute applications that load through iTunes without Apple’s blessing.

Congrats, to whoever found this, but unfortunately, Apple will most likely change the key before the SDK release next month.

UPDATE (01/30/08 by Eric): As it turns out, Erica Sadun was mistaken. Zibree denies ever saying that this key had anything to do with the SDK.

I wonder how rumors run quickly and I am very disappointed

by Erica Sadun of TUAW for telling people this was

a key related to SDK or the “Application Key”.

Well.. i never said it. And, frankly, it’s NOT πŸ™‚

I posted this only because I hate disinformation.

Regards,

Zibri.

[FIRMWARE] Multiple Jailbreak Exploits Found for 1.1.3 Firmware!

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 23, 2008

multiple exploitsmodiphone just minutes ago, announced that there are now multiple ways to jailbreak Apple’s just recently released 1.1.3 firmware!

Here is the rest of the developing story:

Multiple exploits have been found! That means the dev teams can keep one hidden away in their arsenal, and release a 1.1.3 jailbreak sooner rather than later. Information is scarce, but the best I can provide is that the iPhone/Touch Dev teams are working on software/scripts to make the process beginner friendly. The only ETA is β€œsoon.” I will, of course, keep you posted.

Soon?.. Well, that’s better than late February anyway! I’ll keep you posted as the story develops. πŸ™‚

[FIRMWARE] iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware Changes That Have Occured Behind The Scenes

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 22, 2008

Check out what the owner of Cre.ations.net had to say about how the iPhone’s directories and sub-directories have changed around. The writer figures that the 1.1.3 firmeware was made to be capable of installing applications that have been made using the Software Development Kit. Here is exactly what they’ve had to say:

So I’ve had the chance to examine the 1.1.3 firmware on a deeper level (using a technique not developed by me and which I can’t release so don’t ask) and have noticed some interesting changes behind the scenes that are quite blogworthy:

– SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified (via SummerBoard) in order to show extra applications in the /Applications folder.
– All applications now run as the user ‘mobile’ instead of as root.
– Preferences are now stored in /var/mobile rather than in /var/root.

What does this all mean? I’ll tell you what it means.

The iPhone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications.

[FIRMWARE] The Answers to ALL Your Questions in Regards to Firmware 1.1.3 (Jailbreaking, SDK, iTunes 7.6, ect.)

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 22, 2008

all questions answeredHey all! Earlier this morning I was surfing the ipodtouchfans forums, and was getting fed up seeing the same questions being asked over, and over, and over again.

So, knowing that this would just go on if nothing was done, I made a thread, which I named “[THE ANSWERS] to *ALL* your questions in regards to the iPod Touch Firmware 1.1.3“. By the name of the thread, you should already know what the initial thread post consists of…

Anyway, I figured, I might as well share this with my Touch Podium readers as well, seeing as it is in fact a very in-depth, useful FAQ.

So here it is!

When was firmware 1.1.3 released to the public?
Apple released the 1.1.3 firmware right after their MacWorld 2008 KeyNote, on January 15th, 2008.

What exactly does the 1.1.3 firmware do?
Actually, version 1.1.3 of Apple’s iPod Touch firmware doesn’t do a whole lot a good to the average user. The firmware fixes a few bugs here and there, and makes it harder to jailbreak. It also places the files and folders required to run the “App Pack” onto your iPod, but does not allow you to actually run them until you actually send Apple Inc. $20.00 through iTunes 7.6 for the pack itself. Oh, and it also gives you a less stylish dock image.

[NEWS] MacWorld ’08 Keynote iPhone/iPod Touch official information!

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 15, 2008

Steve Jobs iPod TouchThe following information was possible thanks to macrumorslive.com and engadget.com.

– Today marks the 200 day anniversary since the iPhone has been shipping. Jobs is pleased to announce that they’ve sold over 4 million iPhones to this day. That is approximately 20,000 iPhones every single day.

– First quarter shipping, iPhone has got 19.5% of U.S. SmartPhone market (2nd behind RIM).

– iPhone users will be presented with some new features later on today. These features include Maps with location, Webclips, Customize home screen, the ability to SMS multiple people at once, and Lyrics. (all which are already possible with a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone/iPod Touch.

– Webclips (website bookmarks on your home screen) will remember where you zoomed/panned to. You can create up to 9 of these.

– iPhone has added chapter options and language capability in iPod mode.

– The software update will be available today as a free update to all existing iPhone users, unlike the one you are about to hear about next for the iPod Touch…

– Apple Inc. is literally making all iPod Touch users PAY for the apps that are already available on the iPhone (Mail, Maps, Weather, Notes, and Stocks). Can you believe this? How much, you ask? $20.00. (The sad thing is, all of these, and so much more, are available for download through multiple sources with a jailbroken 1.1.2 firmware iPod Touch/iPhone). I won’t be buying this anytime soon.

– The iPod Touch/iPhone SDK will be released some time next month. This will present iPod Touch/iPhone users with many more applications/games/widgets.
