Apple Doubles Touch, iPhone Capacities

Posted by Eric March on February 5, 2008

Thirty-Two, Bay-bee!Rather than waiting until September’s keynote and the usual iPod refresh period, Apple has decided to go ahead and release an upgraded iPhone and iPod Touch with double the capacity — and an associated price hike, according to an announcement made today by Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of worldwide iPod and iPhone product marketing. Available immediately, the iPhone is now available in 8GB and 16GB capacities for $399 and $499 respectively, while the iPod Touch is now available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB flavours for $299, $399 and $499 respectively.

The timing is is a bit unusual for Cupertino’s beloved fruit, winter being traditionally reserved for MacWorld and associated Mac and related peripheral line refreshes and introductions. Nevertheless, for those (like me) who griped and whined last September when Steve announced the puny capacities of these otherwise wonderful devices, larger capacity devices are now available far sooner than anticipated. This in itself is good news, but us early high-end adopters might also feel a little bit cheated, first by that whole $20 January Software Upgrade fiasco, and now by suddenly being faced with the idea of trading our 16 gig devices in for the huge storage boost.

Decisions, decisions.

Apparently The iPhone SDK Key Has Been Leaked Is Still a Secret

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 29, 2008

1-29-08-iphone-sdk

Here is a quote from TUAW:

Last night, an anonymous tipster pointed us to this Austin Heap webpage that purportedly reveals the iPhone’s secret Application SDK key. Another tipster, also anonymous, then tipped me to iPhone “Elite” developer Zibri’s blog, that shows the same key. So what does this mean? Since all iPhone applications must be properly signed for iTunes to process them and for the iPhone to load them, this key suggests that hackers are closer to creating compliant IPA application bundles for home-brew iTunes distribution. With the proper key, developers can create and distribute applications that load through iTunes without Apple’s blessing.

Congrats, to whoever found this, but unfortunately, Apple will most likely change the key before the SDK release next month.

UPDATE (01/30/08 by Eric): As it turns out, Erica Sadun was mistaken. Zibree denies ever saying that this key had anything to do with the SDK.

I wonder how rumors run quickly and I am very disappointed

by Erica Sadun of TUAW for telling people this was

a key related to SDK or the “Application Key”.

Well.. i never said it. And, frankly, it’s NOT 🙂

I posted this only because I hate disinformation.

Regards,

Zibri.

[NEWS] THOUSANDS of iPod Touch owners upset about having to pay $20 for new apps

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 17, 2008

So, as most of you iPod Touch owners probably already know, Apple has released a new firmware update(1.1.3) a couple days back. Along side the new update, they’ve also released the 5 apps that have been available on the iPhone since, well, forever!
.
Good news, right?…Well, it wasn’t so good when Apple announced that current iPod Touch users would have to PAY $20 to get these 5 new applications. In fact, there has already been an online petition made about this situation, which has received just under 5000 (exact figure: 4988) as of right now. That means that there are 5000+ iPod Touch users (that KNOW about this online petition), whom are excruciatingly upset about Apple’s decision to make us pay for something that has already been released for free on previous hardware (the iPhone).
.
Not only that, but newly released iPod Touch’s are coming with these 5 apps for FREE!

[NEWS] MacWorld ’08 Keynote iPhone/iPod Touch official information!

Posted by Jody Mitoma on January 15, 2008

Steve Jobs iPod TouchThe following information was possible thanks to macrumorslive.com and engadget.com.

– Today marks the 200 day anniversary since the iPhone has been shipping. Jobs is pleased to announce that they’ve sold over 4 million iPhones to this day. That is approximately 20,000 iPhones every single day.

– First quarter shipping, iPhone has got 19.5% of U.S. SmartPhone market (2nd behind RIM).

– iPhone users will be presented with some new features later on today. These features include Maps with location, Webclips, Customize home screen, the ability to SMS multiple people at once, and Lyrics. (all which are already possible with a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone/iPod Touch.

– Webclips (website bookmarks on your home screen) will remember where you zoomed/panned to. You can create up to 9 of these.

– iPhone has added chapter options and language capability in iPod mode.

– The software update will be available today as a free update to all existing iPhone users, unlike the one you are about to hear about next for the iPod Touch…

– Apple Inc. is literally making all iPod Touch users PAY for the apps that are already available on the iPhone (Mail, Maps, Weather, Notes, and Stocks). Can you believe this? How much, you ask? $20.00. (The sad thing is, all of these, and so much more, are available for download through multiple sources with a jailbroken 1.1.2 firmware iPod Touch/iPhone). I won’t be buying this anytime soon.

– The iPod Touch/iPhone SDK will be released some time next month. This will present iPod Touch/iPhone users with many more applications/games/widgets.
